SHIPLEY GLEN AERIAL GLIDE

Shipley Glen near Bradford in Yorkshire was an amusement park in Victorian times. The cable tramway was built in 1895 by Sam Wood and is still in operation today. It takes passengers to the top of a wooded, craggy glen where the Pleasure Grounds WERE located.

The owner started to demolish the ride after efforts from campaigners managed to get the ride its deserved protected status. The owner claimed however that it would be more economical for him to demolish the ride and pay the fine than to continue with the running costs of the ride. He appealed the listing status of the ride & demolished it in 2004. At that point it was 1 of the oldest operating ride - attractions in the world.

It was a very small ride, the loading platform was at ground level, and housed the single seated chair-lift like cars. The cars then careered down a rectangular lay-out track, with small undulations, down the hillside to the lift hill, which brought the cars back to the loading platform. I would be grateful for any further pics / information about this ride, the Scenic Railway, the Toboggan, or the Aerial Flight rides which were also found at Shipley Glen Pleasure Grounds.
