The London Eye, or 'Millenium Wheel' as it was to be known, failed to open on New Years Eve 1999 due to technical problems... the gears which rotate the capsules needed tuning, as basically they started tipping over! Partially powered by the Thames river, over which the wheel is suspended, a journey usually takes about 30 minutes, and offers superb views out over London. The hub of the wheel, was made by car manufacturers, SKODA! At 430 ft diameter this is currently the largest Ferris wheel in the world, although there are 2 forthcoming wheels, one in Japan, and another in Las Vegas which will claim the record when completed. The London Eye, operated by British Airways was initially only granted a 5 year planning permission. It remains to be decided if the wheel will stay or go.
