Oblivion at Alton Towers - Worlds' first vertical drop
rollercoaster... except its not! its actually 88.5 degrees, but thats steep enough to
convice you its vertical, once you're perched on the top of the 180ft drop, of which about
one third is visible. The rest is beyond the mist in the deep hole underground. Although
the ride does nothing else, it doesn't really need to, The drop is the most breathtaking
part of any rollercoaster I ever had the pleasure of. Click the thumbnailed

Perched on the top of the drop, the ride pauses for 3 seconds,
Then its straight down, underground into the hole below, pic 3 was taken on opening day, I
don't mean to disturb anyone but yes, that is an ambulance! there was an incident
involving the ride, but there was no downtime. After the dive, the cars exit the tunnel,
and curve around the back of the enterprise, and (originally Energizer- now Submission)
before the brake run. |
