In 1980, this was the first major rollercoaster to be installed at
Alton, under the leadership of John Broome. It was the prototype Vekoma Corkscrew with
bayern curve (the spiral toward the end). There are now numerous clones of this ride
worldwide, one in the UK at Flamingoland. The ride here at Alton used the same logo, until
Festival Park was revamped to Ugland, when new stone age artwork was
adopted. At this time the ride received new Vekoma trains.
Alton announced the removal of
Corkscrew, at the end of the 2008 season, and organised a special day for
enthusiasts to say 'farewell' to the Corkscrew - on Nov 9th 2008, Corkscrew
opened for one last time, before being dismantled as scrap metal. Click the thumbnailed images to

Sunday 9th November 2008 was
Corkscrew's final day of operation. After 28 years of looping, it was time
for 1 last ride, Coasterforce kindly invited enthusiasts from across the
communities to join them in marking the occasion, (photo courtesy

Alton provided a special access area within the ride, 80's
entertainment, and the 'Corkscrew Hall of Memories' - a display of media,
souvenirs, & Corkscrew documentation: |
